The Lithuanians: Birch Sap - Beržo Sultys

Birch sap collection is done by tying a bottle to the tree, drilling a hole into its trunk and leading the sap to the bottle by a plastic tube. A small birch (trunk diameter about 15 cm) can produce up to 5 liters of sap per day, a larger tree (diameter 30 cm) up to 15 liters per day. Birch sap has to be collected in early Spring before any green leaves have appeared, as in late Spring it becomes bitter. The collection period is only about a month per year.

.The price of birch sap is correspondingly high in some countries, e.g. in Japan reaching up to 50 Euro per liter.

. A traditional herbal medicine functioning as antiseptic, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-itching treatment.

.Harvested in a similar manner as Maple Sap to create Maple Syrup only hiughly perishable. Shelf life can be prolonged by freezing or pasteurization. However pasteurization destroys some ingredients and can alter the taste of the product. Frozen birch sap is fairly stable.

.Feature story: Polish President asks that Poles living in Lithuania be allowed to change their names to Polish form.

Comment: So Why did Poles impose the Polish form on Lithuanians centuries ago? A changing wind. Lithuanians living in Poland seem to be allowed to keep Lithuanian Form. Or so the Polish President claimed.

Would you like the world to refer to "Lietuva" as the country's name?

Why change names? Why translate names? Jurgis should be Jurgis and George should be George. No translation needed.

Same with Cities and Towns. Vilnius, Kaunas, Palanga etc are not changed / translated into.. So why translate / change foreign names to a Lithuanian form. Maybe end this language police form and accept native forms as international forms. Leave names alone. China did it with their capitol. So, maybe there will be a change in the wind - and the "W" will be recognized as a letter that can be used in Lithuania, LIETUVA.

Lithuania is well-known to Swedish translator, journalist John Ohman. This documentary reminds us of a dramatic period of Lithuanian history.

The film tells about the post-war [WW II] work of the secret agents smogikų teams [The Soviet Hitmen] the Soviet security used as a tool to finally suppress the armed resistance to the Soviet government.

Most smogikų [Soviet Hitmen] - participants arrested or eradicating their former associates.

Former agents smogikai [of The Soviet Hitmen] tell of the entirely secret scheme, scheming operations themselves and their decisions - how and why they agreed to become smogikais.[Soviet Hitmen]

In the Director's opinion, it was better for an outsider to work this theme and movie than a Lithuanian.

Sorry, but there is a technical difficulty with the Lithuanian Archives. Programs like PANORAMA and LABAS RYTAS have not been available since April 8, 2009. IT technicians in Lithuania are working to solve the issue.

We have also experienced technical difficulties with one of our machine[crashed] used in programming and as a back up. OUR TEAM worked all day yesterday and the machine is about 85% operational. Many programs have yet to be installed. Thank you for your patience. Today some additional tasks need to be completed before we can resume heavy program work.

However, we might be able to bring you one or two Easter programs through our satellite feed - this takes extra time to put into a format for presentation.
