I told you that we use a satellite to get our News and some of our other programming. Well we can follow MEMBERS too. A few minutes ago Algis was over the largest population center of Lithuanians in North America, Illinois and Great Chicago in particular.

Now Algis has about 3 hours and 25 minutes before he Lands in LA -[LAX]. If you want to greet him go to Terminal 6, Gate 62 at about 7:30 PDT.

.

Strike up the band.

He will be quite tired, so don't delay him. Just Greet him - "Labas" [Hello] and wish him a successful return from Lithuania.

Gira, a year round Lithuanian drink

5 liters
I

Ingredients:

• kmynus Caraway
  Razinos raisins
  cukrus sugar .5 kilogram
  mieles yeast 7 grams dry yeast
  7 liters boiling water
  oven toasted [roasted] 7 slices black [rye] bread
  10 minutes pritraukti - infuse [steep]
  after a while Gira reaches room temperature
• add sugar, and stir
• add dry yeast
  then let stand about 4 hours - but no longer - could start to ferment
  Let it cool in the refrigerator
  
• Housewives made this drink from "nothing" like stale bread - dried in the oven
  Can also be made with other base ingredients instead of bread,
• kviečių / wheat, miežių / barley, miltu / flour,
• džiovintais vaisais / Dried fruits

In my last post I mentioned that I would bring you a story of survival, an individual story - a story with the will to survive.

Well over 40 years ago I met Antanas / Tony, who was was a survivor out of Siberia. A US Citizen, originally from Philadelphia that was held by the Russians in a prison camp for a number of years after the conclusion of World War II.
.
This is an example of survival, stubborn survival. One example out of over 3,000,000 Lithuanian stories.

The Lithuanians: 1,000 Years Celebrated By Lithuanians with Song and Dance

With the conclusion of the "1,000 Year Song Festival" in Vilnius, Lithuania - July 1 to July 6, memories of prior events popped up.

.

A thousand years, well it is actually longer, but that was documented in writing that Lithuania was first mentioned

in a medieval German manuscript, the Quedlinburg Chronicle, on 14 February 1009.

.

So, you might say, so what.

.

But, think about it if you know, despite all that history this nation and this people overcame quite a bit to remain unique and united.

.

Lithuanian and its people were overrun time and again and each time, in time, returned as a free nation with language and culture surviving continuously.

.

With the most archaic language, studied by scholars and having been run over numerous times, never lost its identity. It people had too much will, ancient will of thousands of years, to much pride and maybe stubbornness to give in. The language and the culture survived all calamities that came and went.

.

If you saw some of the events of the "1000 Year Song Festival" you could not help but notice how thousands of people from all over the world, Lithuanians, acted a one. One FREE people with joy and singing hundreds of songs. Dancing huge dances in folk rhythm and precision.

.

If you are inclined, see some of these events that were chronicled here from Lithuanian Public Television that were gotten from satellite feed and reformatted the transmission to share with whomever came here. See our JULY archives before some of the feeds expire.

OUR TEAM began very innocently as an aid to our Lithuanian Language Group and the need to find way to teach Lithuanian using audio in 2001. Quite a story. Lithuanian Music began to develop as an interest, which lead to our early radio broadcasts within our Yahoo Group. We built a website or two and then exploded into broadcasting in December 0f 2003. In January we launched our first Radio Broadcast of "The Lithuanians Voice," by buying out side Internet service. Then we launched our own website, third generation in June of 2004. And in 2005 our video effort was reaching the Internet.

So, that's a little about OUR TEAM. The rest, well, what you read, see and hear ... that's the rest of the story.

Well, I decided to write a book, a LIVING BOOK, "LITHUANIA.'

Questions keep being asked about various topics and there seems to be a void at times or things keep disappearing, like websites and important resources get lost.

The Lithuanians: Final Cerimonies - Vingiu Park Concert

Next, we will present the final 3 1/2 hours of the televised portion of the 1,000 Year ceremonies and activities in Vilnius on July 6, 2009.

.

You will see and hear the concert in Vingiu Park and the thousands of singers on stage. This is a colossal presentation and very impressive to the viewer. And, you will see President Valdas Adamkus closing speech and farewell to his Presidency. This will be followed by an address by the King of Sweden and the Lithuanian Army Orchestra.

.

I only wish that it could have been on a FULL screen.

.

The telecast will be arranged into approximately 12 convenient segments as televised on Lithuanian television. So you will not miss anything in this time period.
.
Currently we are in final stages of reformatting all the footage and then the editing will begin. As segments are finished, they will be posted here for you to view.
.
You can expect this next session to begin as soon as it is ready. Look for it and spread the word. Tell your friends of your experience since July 1 and have them come and see the entire showing here since July 1. You can come back and revisit what you saw. Take notes of where you might want to return too.
