The Lithuanians: H1N1 Claims Teen In Kaunas, Lithuania

First H1N1 death confirmed in Lithuania

Vilnius, Nov 18 - The new type of flu, the so-called swine flu, has claimed a life in Lithuania. A teenager died of bacterial infection caused by the flu on Tuesday evening, ELTA was told by Ieva Paulauskiene, spokeswoman for the health minister.

A fourteen-year old boy died from the complication of pandemic flu in the Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital.

The municipalities of Lithuania start announcing influenza epidemics in their territories. Health Minister Algis Caplikas has ordered infectious hospitals and hospitals with infectious disease departments to distribute anti-virals from the state reserve. It is said that Lithuania has gained about 115,000 doses of anti-virals for seasonal and pandemic influenza treatment. RSPUBLIKA

However, in Vilnius and in some parts of the country, prevalence of seasonal influenza in the past week exceeded the epidemic level. On Tuesday, it was reported that none of the six schools would work at full capacity in Ukmerge. Ignalina district municipality canceled gatherings, banned residents from entering schools. Vilnius municipality announced influenza epidemic on Tuesday afternoon. RESPUBLIKA

The Lithuanians: Tour of Panevėžys, Lithuania

Panevėžys was first mentioned in 1503, in documents signed by the
Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander I, who granted the town building
rights to construct a church and other structures.
Alexander II, is considered the founder of the city, which celebrated
its 500th anniversary in 2003. The city lies on the old plain of the
Nevėžis River. The city name means "along the Nevėžis."

Jurbarkas. Road from Kaunas - Lithuania Jurbarkas is picturesque. Here and historical sites and beautiful views of the Nemunas and its valleys.


Jurbarkas is a city in Tauragė County, Lithuania.
It is on the right-hand shore of the
Nemunas River at its confluence with the tributaries Mituva and Imsre.
Although Jurbarkas is said to have been a seat of Lithuanian princes
from the Palemonids legend, it was first documented in 1259.

Three months earlier in 1989 ....

"The Baltic Way" a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on August 23,1989. Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning over 370 miles across the three Baltic states – Estonian SSR, Latvian SSR, and Lithuanian SSR, republics of the Soviet Union. It marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. The pact and its secret protocols divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and led to the occupation of the Baltic states in 1940. The event was organized by Baltic pro-independence movements:

The Lithuanians: Trakai Castle

August 26, 2006
A brief tour of Trakai Castle, before major restoration.

The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great, who died in this castle in 1430.
Trakai was one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance.

The Lithuanians: Darius - Girenas Transatlantic Flight

Stephen Darius - Stanley Girenas,1933 Lithuanian Transatlantic Flight, in the film 'The Flight Over The Atlantic'. Song by Vytautas Kernagis. Darius and Girenas planned flight from New York to Kaunas, Lithuania in their plane 'Lituanica' (a Bellanca) They crashed under mysterious circumstances less than 400 miles from their Kaunas destination .

Although Darius and Girenas did not have navigational equipment and flew under unfavorable weather conditions, the flight was one of the most precise in aviation history. It equaled, and in some aspects surpassed, Charles Lindbergh's classic flight. Lituanica also carried the first Transatlantic air mail consignment in history.

Worlds Largest Cruise Ship sails past Lithuania

World's largest cruise ship

On October 30th 2009, Oasis Of The Seas sailed from Turku, Finland on its way to Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA. Maiden voyage is on December 5th 2009. This vessel has a passenger capacity over 6,000 passengers. It is said to be four times larger than the Titanic built at the cost of over $1.5 billion. The planning and construction began years ago.
